The interaction between human agents and intelligent technology may generate, for different reasons, gaps in control and responsibility. These are situations where it is hard or even impossible to confidently deem individuals morally responsible or even accountable for a certain artificial system’s behavior. Self-driving cars and autonomous weapon systems are notorious high-stakes cases where this discussion has become increasingly relevant. In this short talk, we will explore some of the root problems in human-machine interaction that may generate responsibility gaps and discuss a trending approach to partially address them: meaningful human control.
